MSD Programmable Midget Ignition and Coil Pack MSD 6214 and MSD 8240

In life, there is always a Plan A but sometimes a Plan B is a good idea. Plan A for the EPMiata.Com website was to only sell parts we were running on the car. We made a temporary exception for a couple of parts that we intended to run on the car before rule changes that occured during the build required us to sell them. Plan B was to put these on the website as a "at-cost, while they last" just to get them sold, which quickly happened.

But a few things happened. First, Google gave this page a little bit of page rank, and ranked it #1 for "Miata MSD Midget Ignition". Second, and largely as a result of the first, we started getting interest in buying more than the one that we had on hand. So we came up with Plan C--make this great product available even though we don't run it (because we now run EFI with the FJO Engine Management System.)

When we first decided to build an E-Production Miata, carburetors were the only option if you were going to run the 1.8 liter engine. So, rather than try to run a stock ignition with carburetors, we found this awesome trick distributorless ignition from MSD. Fully programmable. Cool!

The Programmable Midget Ignition is a complete electronic distributorless system consisting of a powerful capacitive discharge Ignition Control, a four tower high output coil pack and uses two non-magnetic pick-ups with a trigger wheel as a crank trigger source. This takes all of the mechanical variables out of the picture to produce exact ignition timing!

Adding to the accuracy and high output of this ignition system, is the advantage of being able to precisely program the timing throughout the engine’s entire rpm range. By using the optional Hand Held Programmer, PN 7550, or MSD’s Pro-Data+ software package on a Windows based PC, racers can program two different timing curves down to .1° per 100 rpm increments! Other features of the Programmable Midget Ignition include a rev limiter to protect the engine from overrev damage, a start retard and a circuit that monitors the battery supply voltage.

The Midget Ignition produces full power capacitive discharge sparks at any rpm so you can be assured of complete combustion. To control this power and the programs, a 15 MHz microcontroller analyzes the various inputs and is capable of extremely quick compensations to maintain exact timing and rpm. The Midget Ignition is supplied with the Ignition Control, two Non-Magnetic Pick-ups, Trigger Magnet, On/Off Switch and Software. To install, you must mount the trigger magnet and pickups on your flywheel or crank pulley.

Couple that with a hot set of Weber DCOE 45 Carburetors and you've got the setup for a pretty bad Miata!
